Bisphosphonate – related osteonecrosis of the jaws

Bisphosphonate therapy recommended for osteopenic diseases may lead to bone necrosis, particularly of the jaw bones. Until now, no case of any other bone necrosis related to bisphosphonate therapy has been documented. Clinical and radiological features of the necrosis as well as methods of treatment are presented. Moreover, three cases of female patients with bisphosphonate – related mandible necrosis are presented. In two of them, bisphosphonate therapy was administered because of metastatic spread of breast cancer to the vertebral column, and in one because of the osteoporosis. Before initiation of bisphosphonate therapy, sanitation of oral cavity is required followed by the high level of oral hygiene care.
