Based on the knowledge about ageing of organs and on fundamentals of biogerontology, we attempted to justify usefulness of a global geriatric assessment as a kind of a standard in medical practice with people in a biologically advanced age. Without such a tool at hand, is it possible to adequately diagnose and cure a growing population of aged people, who become increasingly more visible patients frequenting medical centers? In view of a growing number of problems and choices faced by medical doctors who treat aged people, adoption of certain procedural rules based on geriatric knowledge seems a sine qua non precondition for an efficient medical treatment. Good knowledge of drugs which modify neurotransmission (which otherwise declines with age) furnishes the basis of an efficient pharmacotherapy and limits inappropriate medications, which often is a result of an inadequate therapeutic treatment. An essence of a global geriatric assessment is application of specialized tests and scales, enabling evaluation of the patients’ cognitive functions, moods, movement dysfunctions, nutrition levels, and social risks. Advantages of such evaluation can directly be translated into a less frequent need for medical care, and for the geriatric patients themselves, these advantages mean an improvement of the mortality factors and an increased self-sufficiency outside a hospital. In the presented paper, the authors point out to a limited application of primary prophylaxis of the old age diseases with people approaching an old age and in an early phase of an old age.
