The continuous advances in the pathophysiology, techniques, analytics and their clinical application is very important not only in the area of traditional indices of diabetes mellitus control such as glycaemia, glucosuria, HbA1c, and fructosamine but also in the form of new proposals such as determination of 1,5-anhydroglucitol, self-control of beta-hydroxybutyric acid, and continuous glucose monitoring in subcutaneous tissue extracellular fluid. In the area of technology, particularly useful is the application of a more accurate and specialized new generation of instruments both for laboratory determination of glycaemia and other metabolic indices of diabetes mellitus control and self-monitoring of blood glucose. Such advances significantly improve the organization and delivery of systematic, intensified diabetes mellitus care. It is connected with a holistic approach to this care including patient education, motivation and social support.
