The significance of cytology in the diagnosis of vaginitis and cervicitis is discussed. The cytologic criteria for recognition of vaginitis and cervicitis are set together. Pictures of squamous epithelial and endocervical cells with inflammation features in the cytoplasm and nuclei are presented. The role of complex colposcopic and cytologic examination using direct smears and phase contrast cytology is pointed out, especially in routine diagnostics and controlling the results of vaginitis and cervicitis treatment.
