Historical outline of diagnostics and treatment of urinary incontinence in women

Urinary incontinence has been the condition women have suffered from for ages. The first records related to this ailment come from the 18th century. For many years the only method of treatment of urine incontinence was the use of mechanic devices of which for all those years over 200 have been developed. The research on the activity of lower urinary track has been conducted since the middle of the 19th century. Surgical treatment methods of urinary incontinence in women have developed since the beginning of the 20th century. So far about 200 methods of surgical treatment for urinary incontinence, the majority of which are of historical importance and only a few of them are still used. In the second half of the 20th century, apart from the surgical methods, numerous non-surgical methods for urinary incontinence in women have been created, among which the following ones have been enumerated till now: Kegel exercise, biofeedback and presently less frequently used intraurethral implants.
