Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of connective tissue. It affects exocrine glands such as salivary and lacrimal glands and leads to their dysfunction, resulting in SICCA syndrome (xerostomia and xerophthalmia). Clinical manifestation is highly differentiated; thus classification criteria to recognize this disease are being modified. Since 2002 criteria proposed by the American-European Consensus Group (AECG) have applied. They consider subjective feeling of dryness and objective tests confirming involvement of salivary glands such as sialography, sialometry, ocular tests, and a histopathologic test of minor salivary glands and presence of typical antibodies (Ro/SS-B, La/SS-A). In criteria proposed in 2012 they gave up on part of the diagnostic imaging and the test assessing secretions of the salivary glands in favor of immunological tests.

The purpose of this paper is to review possibilities and restrictions of diagnostic methods proposed and applied until the 2012 criteria and possibilities to apply in clinical practice a number of diagnostic imaging examinations assessing salivary glands.
