The Institute of Rheumatology along with the journal Reumatologia took part in the project entitled “Organization and implementation of the Białystok School of Economics common electronic system for the commercialization of the reviewed scientific publications”. The project was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund as part of Innovative Economy Operational Program 2007–2013 and was carried out by the Białystok School of Economics until July 2014.
The aim of the project was to enable Polish academic institutions, scientific institutes, museums, scientific societies and associations to acquire income from publishing, as well as to let these entities popularize both domestically and abroad the results of research they perform. In the course of the implementation of this project, the articles from scientific journals and publications of the above-mentioned institutions were placed in the electronic database e-Publikacje Nauki Polskiej (Polish Science e-Publications) – ePNP.
Due to the participation of the Institute of Rheumatology in the said project, all articles published in the journal Reumatologia from 2007 until mid-2014 were included in the ePNP database. Institute staff members were able to access, via the Institute library, the entire database free of charge.
The project has been concluded with the International Scientific Conference, which took place on September 24th–26th 2014 in Bialystok, with the honorary patronage of the President of Bialystok and of the National Center for Research and Development (Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju). The invitation to the conference has been extended to the representatives of numerous scientific institutions. During the three days of the conference, speakers presented advantages, as well as problems, associated with the transfer of information in science and with e-learning. A number of lectures were devoted to the role and functioning principles of digital libraries. The speakers taking part in the conference included representatives of scientific institutions from Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, which also took part in the project.
The Institute of Rheumatology was represented by Maria Maślińska, MD, who presented a lecture entitled “Internet in medicine – from the electronic publication to the diagnostics and treatment” created by Maria Maślińska, MD and Irena Lisiewska, MA. It was the only lecture given by a representative of a medical journal. The remaining speakers represented various academic communities – from the humanities to the exact sciences – which resulted in very diverse subjects of the lectures. The presentations concerned mainly the copyrights and the role of digital libraries in promoting readership, as well as in marketing of library services. One should consider the publication “Electronic publication in the development of Polish science”, which will be published by the Białystok School of Economics, as a summary of the conference.
