Lyme borreliosis is a chronic, multisystemic inflammatory disease caused by the tick-borne spirochete Borrelia. The musculoskeletal system is often affected during the disease and Borrelia burgdorferi is a pathogen. Rheumatological symptoms often vary, with a wide spectrum of often non-characteristic features. They include mild, transient pain in the musculoskeletal system, acute arthritis with articular exudate and chronic destructive arthritis, which, however, is not very common (about 10%). In general, diagnosis of Lyme arthritis is difficult and is based on clinical symptoms of arthritis in combination with clinical history and immunoserological tests. In most patients prognosis is good due to high effectiveness of the antibiotic therapy.
