In the first trimester one in every ten pregnancies ends in the miscarriage. During that period of time about 25% of pregnant women have vaginal spotting or bleeding suggestive of threatened miscarriage. Half of this group will eventually miscarry. The symptoms of the miscarriage usually appear suddenly and should be differentiated with other conditions. Accurate identification of those who will inevitably miscarry could potentially save unnecessary emotional stress related to anticipation of the final result, lead to cessation of somatic symptoms and finally shorten the hospitalisation time. The authors have presented the review of opinions regarding pathological background of early pregnancy loss, the current diagnostic methods and the management of threatened miscarriage.
