The social and economic burden of osteoarthritis constitutes a continuously growing worldwide problem. It is estimated that the disease affects approximately 20% of the world adult population. There is great variation in mechanisms of joint alteration during osteoarthritis but the course of unfavorable events leading to osteoarthritis usually is triggered by cartilage degeneration and chondropenia. Observations in recent years have brought new insight into possibilities of treatment of the disease.
