Main directions in the cochlear implant programme in Poznan are presented with the detailed data of performed surgery. Eight hundred and eight implantations were done from 18 January 1994 to mid September 2011, including 804 cochlear implants and 4 auditory brainstem implants. The group of 804 cochlear implants includes 21 hybrid implants used in our centre since the end of 2009. We have used 11 different models of Nucleus devices from the company Cochlear. The age of implantation was 12 months to 79 years. The group of adults consists of 303 patients. The group of 505 implanted patients up to the age of 18 years consists of 215 children implanted before 3 years of age, 157 children implanted between 3 and 7 years and 133 children after 7 years of age. A significant increase in the number of small implanted children was noted in 2005, after introducing in Poland in 2003 the Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening Programme. The most commonly used surgical approach was posterior tympanotomy. A middle fossa approach was used in one case, and in 2 cases the implant was inserted by the external auditory canal. The group of 11 bilaterally implanted patients consists of 5 simultaneously and 6 sequentially done operations.
