One of the most common surgical procedures (20 m/year in the world) is inguinal hernia repair. There are about 40,000–60,000 operations per year of inguinal hernia in Poland. A possible reason for formation of hernia is quantity and quality disorders of collagen structure, which reduces mechanical resistance of tissues. There are many methods of hernia repair – the most common now tension-free techniques (with synthetic mesh).
Aim of work: The aim of the study is to present 7-year results of inguinal hernia repair by Lichtenstein method in the District Hospital in Żyrardow.
Materials and methods: 334 patients operated on by Lichtenstein technique with synthetic mesh were retrospectively analysed. The group consisted of: 317 men aged from 19 to 92 (med. 60) and 18 women aged from 22 to 86 (med. 56). An analysis of frequency of hernia recurrence, patient satisfaction after operation, postoperative complications, wound infections and postoperative pain was undertaken.
Results: The level of hernia recurrence was 3.23%. In 8.2% of cases there were postoperative haematomas; intraperitoneal bleeding – 0.3%, wound infection –2.94%. 5.9% of patients were unsatisfied because of postoperative effects.
