Obesity is a current and increasing healthcare problem. The number of obese people is rising worldwide with tremendous speed. Obesity leads to many diseases which additionally complicate quality of life and increase the treatment expense. Conservative treatment of obesity is relatively ineffective and gives about 5% mostly short-lived weight loss. Dynamic development of bariatric surgery has been observed during recent years. The aim of this review is to present the most frequently used methods in surgical treatment of obesity with an assessment of efficacy. Current trends in bariatric surgery are presented. Moreover, some bariatric procedures whose importance may rise within the next few years are described. The study was written on the basis of a review of international references.
