The definition of optimal dialysis incorporates not only the efficacy of low molecular weight solute elimination, but also should address the whole spectrum of metabolic disturbances of uremia. Optimization of peritoneal dialysis should particularly be focused on the preservation of residual renal function and the protection of the morphologic and functional integrity of peritoneal membrane by using more biocompatible dialysis fluids.
