Therapeutic management of allergic rhinitis should be complex. It consists of education of the patient (in the case of small children, adults who take care of them should also be educated), avoidance of allergens and irritating factors, multiple-stage pharmacotherapy and, in some cases, allergen immunotherapy. The choice of pharmacological option depends on the kind and severity of allergic rhinitis, on the patient's age, availability and price of certain drugs and, finally, on the patient's acceptance of the proposed treatment. Nasal corticosteroids and second-generation antihistamines are the most important drugs in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. The principles of pharmacotherapy in children are similar to those in adults, paying particular attention to the safety of the therapy.
