Laboratory tests, especially some hormonal investigations, are useful but rather supportive measures in the diagnosis of miscarriage. These are being substituted by fast developing ultrasound visualization and therefore become gradually a second line tests.
Nevertheless, serial placental hormone titres in a combination with ultrasound allows accurate diagnosis and prediction of the outcome in 95-99% of endangered pregnancies. Such a combination is a standard used for a pregnancy confirmation, monitoring and further prediction of its outcome as well as placental sufficiency and foetal goodstanding tests.
Authors made a literature review of laboratory tests used in the modern diagnostics of abortion.
