How fast are life’s chemical reactions? A remarkable outcome of the recent application of pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to the study of cellular systems has been the measurement of the rates of rapid enzyme-catalyzed and transmembrane exchange reactions as they occur inside living cells. It is the so-called spin transfer, or magnetization-transfer, technigues which have enabled these measurements.
