abstract="The prevalence of diabetes mellitus, particularly type 2, has increased dramatically over the years. One of the most important complications leading to the development of chronic kidney disease is diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy became the first cause of end-stage renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy. These patients are prone to increased cardiovascular mortality and morbidity and have a decreased quality of life. Over half of deaths in patients with diabetic nephropathy are due to cardiovascular complications. In the review the epidemiology, aetiopathogenesis, and cardiovascular complications of diabetic nephropathy are presented. The role of diabetic nephropathy as a risk factor for cardiovascular complications is stressed and therapeutic approaches including cardio- and nephroprotection are outlined.",
