title="Original papers The influence of emollient Eucerin\® Soothing lotion 12% Omega on transepidermal water loss, moisturization of epidermis and skin elasticity in children with atopic dermatitis",
abstract=" Abstract Introduction, : Atopic dermatitis is chronic and pruritic dermatosis with complex etiopathogenesis. Moisturizing formulations, known as emollients, are used for basic treatment in remission periods as well as in cases of exacerbation of skin lesions. Aim : The main purpose of the study was to analyze the influence of the emollient Eucerin\® Soothing lotion 12% Omega (NIVEA Polska Sp. z o.o., Beiersdorf Group) on transepidermal water loss, moisturization of epidermis and skin elasticity in a group of children suffering from atopic dermatitis. The results were analysed in relation to the clinical score evaluated with the W-AZS index and age of patients. Material and methods: Forty patients aged 2-18 years (mean age 8.4 years) were investigated. The investigated emollient was applied for the time period of 4 weeks. Evaluation of clinical score was based on W-AZS index (subjective and objective symptoms). The assessment of TEWL, moisturization of epidermis and skin elasticity was performed before the enrolment of the patient in the study and 2 and 4 weeks later, using Courage-Khazaka equipment. Additional measures were performed after another 2 weeks as a follow-up procedure. Results : After 2 and 4 weeks of therapy the W-AZS score decreased significantly. A statistically significant increase in epidermis moisturization and decrease in TEWL measures were observed within one day. The desired effect of preparation was maintained during the whole observational period. In terms of elasticity of the skin no statistically significant differences were obtained. A correlation between W-AZS index and corneometric values before and 2 weeks after completing the therapy was found. In the group of children aged 2\–6 the corneometric level of epidermis moisturization was significantly higher. In statistical analysis an inversely proportional correlation between corneometry and patients\’ age was demonstrated. Conclusions : The use of emollients in management of atopic dermatitis patients contributes to the reduction of pruritus and severity of skin inflammation as well as prolonging remission periods. Emollients decrease TEWL and elevate the epidermis moisture.",
