abstract="Appropriate combinations of antihypertensive drugs offer the promise of reaching therapeutic goals in a higher proportion of patients with hypertension, and in particular in subgroups with severe hypertension, high or very high added cardiovascular risk, and in patients with lower blood pressure goals, i.e. less than 130/80 mm Hg. However, an optimal combination of antihypertensive drugs has not been established. In a recent ACCOMPLISH trial, a combination of an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) and a calcium antagonist has been proven superior to a combination of an ACEI and a thiazide diuretic in regard to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality reduction. These data suggest that a combination of an ACEI and a calcium antagonist may be the preferred first-line antihypertensive treatment in many patients with hypertension.",
