title="Incidence of dermatologic complications and their causes in the group of patients with intestinal stomas",
abstract=" Introduction : Correct localization and creation of a intestinal stoma is one of the most important factors determining its right functioning, and also has a significant influence on patient’s quality of life. Dermatological complications result from skin damage caused by the leakage of intestinal contents, allergy to stoma appliances, and bacterial and/or fungal infections. Aim of the study: The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of dermatologic complications and their causes in the group of patients with intestinal stomas. Material and methods : The study took place between 2005 and 2008 among patients with created intestinal stomas living in Podkarpacki and Malopolski Voivodeships. Author’s survey questionnaires were administered to 210 patients, self-care capable (from 80 to 100 points according to Barthel’s scale), aged between 22 and 88 years. Obtained research material was analyzed statistically using the Chi-square test. Results : The study showed that dermatologic complications of the stoma are frequent since 58% of respondents suffered from them. However, most of these complications occurred sporadically (45.1%) or rarely (36.9%). Skin changes were reported more frequently by patients who had surgical complications as well (71.9%), than those without any post-surgical problems (47.9%) Conclusions : The most frequent dermatologic complications include skin irritation and skin inflammation caused by intestinal contents. Dermatologic complications are observed among women more frequently than among men. The type of stoma appliance may determine the occurrence of dermatologic complications. Surgical and dermatologic complications seem to be correlated with each other.",
