abstract="Polish society is getting elderly. This has a real impact on the family doctors practice. Due to the insufficient number of geriatricians, elderly patient care, given its comprehensive nature, is a growing challenge for family physicians. Hence there is a need to become more familiar with the basic tools that can be used to assess the health status of elderly patients. This article is the beginning of the series, in which we will introduce the basic tools to evaluate patients in age 65+. In this way, we allow better understanding between the geriatrician and the family physician, and if a specialist is inaccessible it should improve the quality of treatment of elderly patients. In this article we will discuss the Barthel scale used for assessment of patients’ functional efficiency and eligibility for long-term care.",
