title="Remarks on some precursor work of hospice development in Poland",
abstract="The history of development of palliative care in the second half of the twentieth century is well known. It has its roots in some earlier precursor work done by religious convents and secular societies. Each country has its own traditions that has shaped the following developments. This article describes some of the Polish initiatives from the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century focused on the care of the incurable and home care of the sick poor. The differences between similar initiatives in western Europe in the same period are shown, being the effect of political and social circumstances. Care for incurables was organized by religious orders as well as secular societies. What makes significant difference to western Europe however is small number of institutions caring solely of the dying. Further research is needed to establish the details of care provided.",
