abstract="The role of vitamin D in the prevention of rickets and osteomalacia is commonly known. Research in recent years suggests that the beneficial effect of supplementing its deficiency is not limited to the regulation of calcium absorption and bone metabolism. Data indicate reduction of the risk of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, infections, autoimmune diseases, and others. Vitamin D deficiency is common in the Central European population. It has been documented mainly due to low sun exposure. That is why its proper supplementation and treatment of insufficiency plays a more important role. The article presents current data on the role and metabolism of vitamin D, recommendations for supplementation of vitamin D, and treatment of its deficiency in various age groups and accompanying diseases.",
