title="Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastani) in contemporary therapy",
abstract="Peripheral chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is an important public health problem. Approximately 20 to 25% of women and 10 to 15% of men suffer from CVI. Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is an herbal remedy traditionaly used for CVI treatment. The major active principle from Aesculus hippocastanum is aescin, which is a mixture of triterpene saponins. However, horse chestnut also contains other pharmacologically active constituents including coumarins and flavonoids. Horse chestnut extract has antiinflamatory, anti-oedematous and venotonic properties. Data from randomized controlled trials have shown significant improvement of the symptoms in patients with CVI. Horse chestnut extract reduced leg volume, ankle and calf circumference and showed significant effectiveness regarding pain and ichting.",
