title="Self-evaluation of patients\’ expectations and knowledge of preparation for surgery",
abstract=" Introduction. The elaboration of the optimum method of informing and preparing patients for a scheduled surgery requires an evaluation of their level of knowledge and expectations in this respect. Aim of the study. The purpose of the paper is to examine the self-evaluation of patients\’ knowledge of their preparation for a scheduled surgery, and the assessment of patients\’ expectations. Material and methods. The material comprises 150 patients being prepared for a scheduled surgery at the Municipal Hospital in Gdynia Urology, Surgery and Orthopedics Ward from December to April 2010. The methods applied are diagnostic survey, literature analysis and statistical analysis. Results and conclusions. The study findings indicate that the self-evaluation of patients\’ knowledge does not depend on demographic variables, while the expectations depend on the respondents\’ education. There are significant differences between the expectations of persons living in the country and those living in towns with over 20 thousand inhabitants.",
