title="Support and sense of coherence (SOC) as determinants in regaining health in men with prostate cancer",
abstract=" Introduction . According to Antonovsky, the author of the salutogenic theory, people have resources which help them cope with difficult situations. Strong sense of coherence (SOC) and support enable patients to fight the disease. The aim of the study . The aim of the study was to estimate the level of SOC and kind of support received by patients with prostate cancer. Material and methods . The study was conducted on the Oncology/Urology Ward, Oncology Center, Bydgoszcz and included 82 men with prostate cancer. SOC was assessed using Antonovsky\’s SOC-29 and the support was measured using Kmiecik-Baran scale. Results . The patients had lowered global SOC, the differences were observed in valuative and emotional support. The higher SOC level, the less need for emotional and informative support and better manageability. Conclusions . Estimation of the levels of SOC and social support might be used as determinants of care of patients with cancer at different stages of the disease. Nursing Topics 2011; 19 (1): 81\–85",
