title="Surgical nurses’ perception of an ideal boss",
abstract=" Introduction. Operating theater is an autonomous part of a hospital. Apart from being an important cost center and a place where the most difficult high-risk medical procedures are performed, operating theater is also the principal source of a hospital’s revenue. Therefore, aside from possessing appropriate personality traits and professional qualifications, the head of an operating theater should be also a strong leader. Aim. The aim of this study was to answer the question on the characteristics of an ideal operating theater’s leader. Material and methods. The study included 120 nurses employed at operating theaters of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The study was based on an anonymous survey developed exclusively for the purpose of this project. Results and conclusions. Surgical nurses were consistent in their opinions on the characteristics of their ideal boss. The most desirable traits of a ward nurse or operating theater’s head included high levels of experience, knowledge, respect for staff and their opinions. The surgeons working as the operating theater’s heads should present appropriate practical skills, knowledge, experience, responsibility and peace. Nursing Topics 2014; 22 (4): 439–444 ",
