abstract="Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of drugs that are often used not only by gastroenterologists, but also by physicians of other specialties (including family doctors, surgeons, and otolaryngologists). In addition, the frequency of PPI use was undoubtedly influenced by the fact that some drugs from this group became available without prescription. Considering the above information, as well as the often chronic nature of diseases in which PPIs have been used for many years, there is a discussion about the safety of their long-term use. The time that has passed since PPIs were introduced to the market allows some clinical conclusions to be drawn and at least a partial assessment of the safety profile of these drugs. This article will discuss issues that, according to the author, pose the greatest problems during therapy with proton pump inhibitors.",
