title="Small intestine bacterial overgrowth – SIBO. How to diagnose and treat it in the practice of the family physician according to new guidelines",
abstract="Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a syndrome of gastrointestinal symptoms caused by excessive bacteria in the small intestine. It may result from chronic proton pump inhibitor use or accompany diseases such as IBS, diabetes mellitus, or diverticular disease. SIBO may coexist with fungal overgrowth (SIFO) or archaea overgrowth (IMO). Currently, respiratory tests are the mainstay of SIBO diagnosis. The preferred treatment is eradication of the growth with eubiotic rifaximin. A low-FODMAP diet and soluble fibre not raised bloating like arabinogalactan may be helpful for bloating and soluble fibre supplementation for constipation. Data on the use of probiotics in SIBO are inconclusive, and prokinetics are too sparse to recommend them in guidelines.",
