abstract=" Aim: Estimation of unknown diabetes in the Warmia and Mazury Region (W\&MR). Materials and methods: A randomly selected group of subjects were interviewed about their age, sex, education and family history of cardio-vascular and diabetic problems in a questionnaire-based study; their incidental glycaemia was checked (in the case of abnormal results it was verified by fasting glycaemia or oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)); their arterial pressure, BMI and waist and hip measurements were taken. Results: Out of 659 subjects (419 women, 240 men), aged on average 58\±9.5 years, impaired fasting glucose (IFG) was found in 2%, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in 2,6% and diabetes mellitus (DM) in 1.7% of subjects. Arterial hypertension was observed significantly more often in subjects with impaired glycaemia \– 85.36% vs 57.93%. No statistically significant relation was found between carbohydrate metabolism disorders and family history of diabetes. Conclusions: 1. In the screening study in the W\&M region unknown diabetes was diagnosed in 1.7%, IFG in 2% and IGT in 2,6% of subjects. 2. The results of the study show that screening for carbohydrate disorders is needed in patients of any age, in family doctors\’ outpatient clinics.",
