abstract="Diabetes has become a major health problem affecting a large number of individuals worldwide and is associated with an increased risk of cognitive dysfunction, depression and dementia. On the other hand, occurrence of neuropsychiatric disorders among people with normal glucose metabolism predisposes them to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. There is a hypothesis, supported by the outcomes of numerous experiments conducted in animals and large population-based studies in humans, that brain-derived neurotrophic factor plays a systemic role in human glucose metabolism. It is now assumed that decreased level of this active peptide is a pathogenetic factor common to cognitive dysfunction, depression and dementia as well as type 2 diabetes mellitus.",
