abstract="Iatrogenic dissection of common carotid artery is a rare, but potentially dangerous complication of carotid artery stenting (CAS). Iatrogenic dissection occurred in two patients (0.4%) among 480 CAS procedures performed with temporary brain protection systems in our center. In both cases, the dissection occurred during cannulation with a diagnostic catheter and teflon guidewire. Additional stent implantation was required because of high risk of vessel occlusion, extension of vessel injury and/or of flow impairment. No new brain ischemic symptoms were observed in peri- and postprocedural period and during three-month follow-up. In conclusion, treatment of iatrogenic dissection of common carotid artery with angioplasty and stent implantation is an effective method to provide anatomical and functional recovery of the carotid artery.",
