%0 Journal Article %J Gastroenterology Review/Przegląd Gastroenterologiczny %@ 1895-5770 %V 5 %N 6 %D 2010 %F Dudarewicz2010 %T Importance of selected polymorphisms of ABCB1 (MDR1) gene in inflammatory bowel diseases %X Inflammatory bowl diseases (IBD) include ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD) as well as unspecified forms. UC and CD are complex genetic disorders resulting from interaction between genetic, environmental, immunological and bacterial factors. One of the drug transporters, P-glycoprotein (P-gp), is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of IBD. It is known that P-gp also constitutes a barrier against xenobiotics in the intestinal epithelial cells. P-gp is encoded by the gene ABCB1 (MDR1). ABCB1 (MDR1) polymorphisms and haplotypes may affect both the synthesis level and activity of P-gp in epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract.
