Their action involves synthesising eicosanoids (including those that reduce inflammation and participate in the regulation of cell proliferation), secreting hormones and neuromediators, and transporting ions. They have anti-inflammatory, anti-aggregating, hypotensive and antiallergic properties, and improve immunity. Their cardiovascular effects have been best understood so far, which has resulted in their inclusion in the management of hypertriglyceridemia and heart failure. It has been proven that high doses of icosapentate ethyl reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. In addition, they are recommended in the prevention of premature births and adjuvant treatments for depression. The dosage of omega-3 fatty acids recommended in the guidelines to achieve clinically significant effects are difficult to obtain through diet. The nutritional sources of EPA and DHA are fish and seafood. It was confirmed that their increased consumption has a beneficial effect mainly on the circulatory system and the organ of vision. Research on the use of supplements often indicates that they are not as effective as a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids. In order to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases, it is recommended to provide two portions of fish per week, including one portion of fatty fish as well as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) from vegetable oils and nuts. Research is being carried out on the potential use of omega-3 supplements in many diseases. The necessary minimum recommended in nutrition standards for adults is 250 mg of EPA + DHA. Therefore, the people whose diet is low in fish containing LC-PUFA can be advised to take doses similar to those indicated in the standards to supplement deficiencies in their diet. Numerous analyses have confirmed the safety of their use. %A Saran-Jagodzińska, Agnieszka %P 278-285 %9 journal article %U https://www.termedia.pl/Kiedy-nalezy-rozwazyc-stosowanie-kwasow-omega-3,98,42949,1,1.html
