TY - JOUR JO - Medycyna Paliatywna/Palliative Medicine SN - 2081-0016 VL - 5 IS - 4 PY - 2013 ID - Dzierżanowski2013 TI - The use of oxycodone/naloxone prolonged release tablets as a first choice opioid in a patient with constipation and strong pain AB - Constipation is a difficult to treat side effect of opioid analgesics, therefore, prophylactic treatment is recommended with the commencement of the use of opioid. Causal treatment is the use of the opioid antagonist. The use of the oral formulation consisting of the opioid and opioid antagonist is effective in secondary prophylaxis. In this case, it was demonstrated its use in a patient who already suffered severe constipation when the treatment with a strong opioid appeared necessary. It was used oxycodone/naloxone prolonged release tablets, to prevent further worsening bowel dysfunction. As a result of the use of the formulation of an opioid antagonist, complete restoration of regular daily bowel movements along with good analgesia and tolerability have been accomplished. Not only the bowel function did not worsen, but the constipation of etiology other than attributable to opioids ceased.
