TY - JOUR JO - Lekarz POZ SN - 2450-3517 VL - 4 IS - 4 PY - 2018 ID - Wierzbiński2018 TI - Depression and pain AB - A sufficient amount of evidence has been collected to regard depression as a systemic disease. Chronic pain is a frequent concomitant of depression, which results from the fact that pain and depression share the same conditions at the neuroanatomic and immunological level to develop. Although pain is not included in diagnostic criteria, its occurrence is linked to a higher risk of developing depression disorders. Depression alone also affects the pain threshold. Antidepressants act as painkillers, and this knowledge is applied in clinical practice. The more effective antidepressants acting as painkillers include those with a dual mediation effect and those affecting the noradrenergic system – these also include SNRI and TCA drugs.
