Histopathological examination of the skin biopsies obtained from patients with CVI revealed both lymphocyte and macrophage domination and significantly increased lymphocyte T helper (Th) and T suppressor ratio. Delayed type of allergic reaction was related to Th1 lymphocyte activation and the presence of Th1 profile cytokines, including interleukin 2 (IL-2). IL-2 plays an important role in effector lymphocyte differentiation and formation of specifically sensitized cells. Moreover, increased level of the a chain of the soluble receptor for IL-2 (IL2sR) is known as a sensitive and specific marker of T lymphocyte activation. The main aim of the study was to determine and compare the IL2sR serum levels in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), contact dermatitis, venous leg ulcers (VLU) and in healthy individuals. The investigated population comprised 140 individuals. Significantly important differences were obtained between VLU patients and AD, as well as contact dermatitis patients and healthy controls. IL2sR elevated serum level in patients with VLU proves T lymphocyte activation and is indirectly related to the intensification of inflammatory processes. Moreover, it indicates the possibility of development of the cell type allergic response.
