β-blockers are used widely in the treatment of cardiological diseases. They are very important in the medication of hypertension coexisting with ischaemic heart disease and heart failure. However, the last report of JNC no longer recommends this group of agents as first-line antihypertensive treatment in patients with hypertension without complications. The main reason for this recommendation was the results of the ALLHAT study. ESC, ISH and the Polish Society of Hypertension do not agree with the American point of view. We are sure that β-blockers are very effective agents in hypertensive patients, especially with concomitant heart failure or coronary heart disease.
