Due to the presence of persistent, primary negative symptoms deficit schizophrenia is separated from the group of schizophrenic psychosis. The difference between deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia consists of risk factors,

family history, disease course, treatment response, neuropsychological functioning and neurobiological differences. To evaluate clinical condition Schedule of Deficit Syndrome (SDS) is used. Patients with this form of schizophrenia show better treatment response to atypical neuroleptics. Regarding genetic background data, deficit schizophrenia is recognized as one of schizophrenic endophenotypes.
