Hypnoanalgesia is one of the oldest methods of acute and chronic pain control. In the last two decades results of numerous research projects on the subject of hypnoanalgesia have been published. The advances in neuroimaging techniques have contributed greatly to the expansion of knowledge on the nature of hypnosis and hypnoanalgesia. Contemporary scientific data supports the hypothesis that hypnoanalgesia is an effective and safe method of pain management in a great variety of clinical conditions. This article is a selective review of studies and clinical application methods of hypnoanalgesia in contemporary medicine.
