Cough is one of the most common causes of medical consultations. Occurrence of cough in children is usually associated with acute respiratory infections. A particular clinical problem is a chronic cough which could be associated with many different causes. Chronic cough in children requires careful diagnosis and specific treatment. The differential diagnosis should include less common pathologies including congenital structural abnormalities of the respiratory, digestive and circulatory system. Most important is to establish diagnosis of diseases which can cause changes that affect the length and quality of life, such as cystic fibrosis, α-1 antitrypsin deficiency, primary ciliary dyskinesia or primary immunodeficiency. Among the causes of chronic cough gastroesophageal reflux, psychogenic causes, use of certain drugs and the effects of irritants are mentioned.
