Vascular complications are the main cause of disability and preterm death among young people with diabetes mellitus (DM). Mortality because of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people with glucose metabolism disturbances is 2-4 times higher than in the general population. In diabetic patients disturbances in function and quality of platelets are characteristic. Use of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in prophylaxis of CVD has been recommended for years also in DM. However, there are still controversies regarding the optimal dose for this group of people. ASA resistance contributes to difficulties in treatment. The effect of ASA on micro- and macroangiopathic complications makes antiplatelet therapy in DM an essential, clinical problem.
