The analysis of the hospitalization causes and outcomes of the newborns’ treatment in the pathology and intensive care unit. The role of the neonatological nurse

Introduction. There is a development of neonatology during the last twenty years. The progress of the diseases processes in the newborn’s
period is violent and minutes or hours decide about the newborn’s life or permanent damage. Very important for the early diagnosis of pathology are: early assessment of a newborn’s stage, deepen of the clinical assessment of the base on biophysical monitoring and laboratory tests. The three — tier system is a model of perinatal care in which an assessment of stage of risk of pregnancy is a base for a referral to
appropriate level of perinatal care.

Aim of the study. The analysis of the hospitalization reasons and outcomes of newborns’ treatment hospitalized in Oddział Patologii
i Intensywnej Terapii Noworodka in Wojewódzki Szpital Specjalistyczny in Częstochowa.

Material and methods. Research have included 1560 newborns staying in hospital in 2000–2008. Research were conduct on the basis of retrospective analysis of newborns’ medical histories, cards daily observation of the patient and medical orders which were leaded from the moment of the admission to the ward to the discharge, transmission to other hospital or the newborn’s death.

Results and conclusions. The increase of newborns’ hospitalization was observed in the last years. Infections and prematurity were the
main reasons of it. The stage allowing to discharge the child from the hospital was obtained in more than 90% cases. In the research material
the newborns’ death were shaped on the 2.4% level children who were treated, from which 79% concerning prematures.
