Caesarean section performed for vital reasons very often saves child’s and woman’s in labour life. Among the reasons of the increase in the incidence of Caesarean sections are listed: paying more attention to the neonate’s condition, growth of the number of patients with high risk pregnancies, use modern diagnostic methods allowing earlier prediction of fetal risk. According to the WHO report, the percentage of the Caesarean sections should not exceed
10-15%.
The aim of the study was the analysis of the Caesarean section indications in the Municipal Hospital in Chorzów. In order to gather the material for the data of the Caesarean section indications in the hospital in the years 1999-2003, the method of the analysis of the documentation was used. In the analysed material, the most numerous group with Caesarean section indication was the state after Caesarean section (26.7%) and the dysfunction of muscular uterine contraction (labour pains) combined with the lack of progress of labour (18.8%). The rarest indication to the delivery by Caesarean section was: multifetal pregnancy (1.2%) and the fetus weight (2.3%). In conclusion, it should be stated that, together with the growth of pre-natal diagnosis, the change of the trends in conducting a labour and the progress in medicine, the number of women delivering by Caesarean section grows successfully.
