Anaphylaxis, symptoms and treatment of anaphylactic shock

Anaphylactic shock is an example of life-threatening anaphylaxis resulting from the sudden release of mast cell- and basophil-derived mediators into the circulation and shock organs. Theoretically any agents capable of directly or indirectly activating and degranulating mast cells and basophils can cause anaphylactic shock. Practically the reaction is usually mediated by IgE antibody. Medicines (b-lactam antibiotics), foods (peanuts, other nuts, crustaceans), sting insect venoms and allergen immunotherapy cause most anaphylactic shock episodes for which a cause can be identified. This review also discusses other causes, pathophysiological mechanism, clinical picture, prophylactic principles and treatment of anaphylactic shock.
