The main goals to be achieved in the treatment of patients suffering from COPD is diminution of symptoms severity, improvement of the QoL, reduction of the exacerbation episodes and resultant hospital admissions, increase of physical capacity, stabilization of lung function tests and elongation of life span. The above listed goals are attain-able by using tiotropium. Its efficacy surpasses the effectiveness of long-acting betamimetics and short-acting anticholinergics. The optimal treatment results in COPD patients has been achieved with concomitant use of tiotropium with long-acting betamimetics or composite formulation. Tiotropium has been proved to have positive safety profile.
