Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists give the opportunity for multiple clinical intervention in type 2 diabetes patients. Beyond glucose control, use of GLP-1 agonists may cause reduction of cardiovascular risk factors. Experimental studies and clinical trials have shown numerous clinical benefits of GLP-1 and the GLP-1 analogue liraglutide on the cardiovascular system, independent of their glycaemic effect. A more complete view of liraglutide’s cardiovascular effect will be provided based on results from the prospective phase III trial LEADERTM.
