Diseases of the cardiovascular system are currently the main causes of death. Diabetics constitute a very important group of patients. The incidence of coronary heart disease in this group is five times higher than among non-diabetic patients. In the case of invasive treatment of coronary artery disease among patients with diabetes the factor that deteriorate prognosis is restenosis. Administration of antiproliferative drug-eluting stents, which inhibit formation of neointima and thus significantly reduce the incidence of restenosis, seems to be particulary benefitial for diabetics.
