Introduction. Parabens (p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters) are registered as substances authorized for use and belong to a group of safer preservatives. These compounds are often used because of their wide range of effects, low toxicity and biodegradability. Although parabens have been used for many years, not only in cosmetics, but also in food and medicines, their safety is still being questioned.

Objective. Assessment of consumers' health consciousness and knowledge of parabens and of their impact on the human organism.

Material and methods. An author's online questionnaire form was used for the research. The obtained results were analysed with the application of the Microsoft Excel program.

Results. Analysis of the results allowed us to obtain information on consumers' awareness of the presence of parabens in cosmetic products. It also showed what the respondents took into account when selecting cosmetics, where they shop for cosmetics and whether they pay attention to the labeling of cosmetic products.

Conclusions. The results confirmed the hypothesis that consumers do not have sufficient knowledge on parabens, however they still consider them to be harmful.
